Our direct ancestor, Robert De Mauteby (1220-1292) married Ellen Marshal, the 4th great granddaughter of John Marshal FitzGilbert (1105-1165), who was the father of William Marshal 1st Earl of Pembroke (1146-1219), known as “The Greatest Knight”.

Several generations later our direct ancestor, Robert Mautby (1375-1418) married the 6th great granddaughter of William Marshal, Margaret Beauchamp (1382-1409) who was also the 3rd great granddaughter of Sir William De Beauchamp (1237-1298), the 9th Earl of Warwick.

William Marshals son, William Marshal, 2nd Earl of Pembroke, Magna Carta Surety (1190-1231), married Eleanor of Leicester, Countess of Pembroke & Leicester (1215-1275), the daughter of King John I of England (1166-1216) and sister of King Henry III of England (1207-1272).

William Marshal’s daughter Isabel Marshal (1200-1240) married Gilbert de Clare 5th Earl of Gloucester (1180-1230) and their great grandson was Robert the Bruce (1274-1329) who became Robert I King of Scotland in 1306 and reigned until he died in 1329.

Queen Elizabeth II (1926-2022) was also a direct descendant of Robert the Bruce.

Robert the Bruce was father to Marjorie Bruce, the mother of Robert II of Scotland. Robert II was the father of James I of Scotland. From here there is a succession of Jameses to James V who was Mary, Queen of Scots’ father. Mary Queen of Scots’ son was James VI. His daughter Princess Elizabeth had a daughter, Princess Sophia, who was the mother of George I, father of George II. George II had a son, Frederick, who was father to George III and grandfather to George IV. George IV’s son, Edward Duke of Kent was father to Victoria, grandfather to Edward VII, great-grandfather to George V, and great-great-grandfather to George VI, who was Elizabeth II’s father.
