He mediated between <a href=\"http:\/\/mawbey.com\/index.php\/rootspersona-tree\/lackland-plantagenet-king-john-i\/\">King John I<\/a> and the barons, secured the agreement embodied in Magna Carta and was one of the King\u2019s advisors at Runnymede. When John died, William Marshal became guardian of the boy-king <a href=\"http:\/\/mawbey.com\/index.php\/rootspersona-tree\/king-of-england-henry-iii\/\">Henry III<\/a> and of the kingdom. He re-issued <a href=\"http:\/\/www.templechurch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/magna-carta.pdf\">Magna Carta<\/a> under his own seal in 1216 and 1217, and so ensured its survival. He was buried in <a href=\"http:\/\/templechurch.com\">Temple Church, London<\/a>\u00a0in the Round where his effigy still lies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>William\u2019s heir,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mawbey.com\/index.php\/rootspersona-tree\/marshal-william\/\">William Marshal, 2nd Earl of Pembroke<\/a>, was one of the Surety Barons at Runnymede. He then fought alongside his father at the Battle of Lincoln to save the kingdom for Henry III. He married Henry\u2019s sister,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mawbey.com\/index.php\/rootspersona-tree\/of-leicester-eleanor\/\">Eleanor of Leicester, Countess of Pembroke &amp; Leicester<\/a>.
